1.
Archaeology 03:36
The earth spoke The earth spoke With the first stroke of the spade Deeper, deeper Until it has nothing left to say Truth lies The truth lies Somewhere in the folds Leave me Leave me With something good to hold Daybreak finds us stranded in a dream of fields drenched in static The world unstitching at the seams Before it's even started The past and future echoing Across a common canyon The arrow turns into a ring
2.
I saw the future unfold The darkness that swallowed us whole You couldn't find your own pain I found it again and again We dared not face our enemy How could we possibly? And time flows, foggy-white Bells ringing out in the night There are ghosts in the hall Figures dimly recalled I still see the shapes echoing I see their grinding and creaking I stay up late and think heavy things It has been snowing steadily Bright caps and blankets of hiss Moments once buried in mists Burst like stars upon my memory
3.
Flotsam 01:52
Caught in the great river of everything And clinging to flotsam again
4.
I couldn't really see at all, but there was lightning There were footsteps sounding in the hall, there were screams To face the night and try to fall, without fighting, deep into dream Hidden in the heart of things, that's where the truth lies Folds forever blossoming, petals white And every time I close my eyes I see it sparkling Sweet whirlwinds of light With the flick of a switch there were clear shapes And the awful truth to which we'd been blind Memory and grief exchanged like a handshake Across decades and ancestral lines

Partners 05:23
I woke up surrounded by troubling signs Visions impossible to trust or deny You and I Lives blotted out Reenactors, renderers, Partners in crimes I tried to remind you, you couldn't recall Did it happen that way? Did it happen at all? So I do the remembering Give names to nameless things I've got archiving fever and I'm feeling for walls But the light is still on in the hall The light is still on in the hall Under the needle our fractures were scanned You were deaf to the deafening sound of events But somewhere in mist Our echoes exist Too strange to each other to misunderstand The lines in the palms of our hands The shared lines in the palms of our hands I woke up surrounded by troubling signs Visions impossible to trust or deny You and me And space debris Trapped in a fortress, hurtling through time

Microcosms 04:36
Behind each and every door Microcosms of a bigger war A constant burning to the ground Fires being passed around This land - absorbing skin The sky - forever darkening The memories in crypts All mirrored in the nucleus And mirroring And so the light will bend But our cursed souls cannot ascend To anything The days blow past The echoes blast And we try to cling Ghosts upon ghosts Clinging to their creaking hosts In the echoes of our home In the fault lines in our broken bones And out in the streets Over rubble just as underneath And they're clawing at the sun Making shades of everyone And everything And so the light will bend But our cursed souls cannot ascend To anything The years blow past The echoes blast And we try to cling
9.
Our House 02:10
It came And it was formless A mass of ancient particles Flooding our apartment It snaked That's how it gets in It seeped in through the blueprints Infecting everything The tree In the front yard Always kept the number hidden Like we kept things in our hearts Our house… It shakes And it wobbles And then it shakes off all the damage And dreams its dreams of rubble Our house is very beautiful at night Our house is very beautiful at night
10.
We dared not face our enemy How could we?
11.
The curses happen vertically They plummet or else float from below To a present always-settling Wet with a perpetual glow So my hands start to shake And the pain radiates I press my ear to the dirt Try to keep track of the world And the feeling kind of stops But it never goes away We carry shadows within And they're forever to stay There are strange new shapes created When it's late and dark and quiet enough In a room once dimly lit by the half-light of habit Now bright Traces of things happening Secrets told and lost in the light I turn to immediate things Your face The color of spring The blood thick in my lungs Bicycle spokes in the sun And the feeling kind of stops But it never goes away It's true we carry shadows within Forever

The sky in the distance

The Storm 03:22
A voice cut through the static Calling out to us We jockeyed into position And leaned into the sun And it came back in flashes And left us cold and numb We were curled up in a corner with our eyes full of signs Gathering the pieces of the truth we'd left behind Feeling layers slowly peeling away And trying to keep the forces at bay The sky lit up in the distance With no apparent sound A fork in the lightning Bridging cloud to cloud We stood at the edges And counted out to five Curled up in the corner with our eyes full of signs Gathering the pieces of the truth we'd left behind Feeling all the lies just peeling away Our hearts illuminated by the heavy light of day We stood up to be counted under thundering skies Holding all the pieces while the world just passed us by Shook its head and wagged its finger to say "None of this is true" and so we chased the day away Now I don't know how you're weathering the storm I fell into leaving, leaving you alone It's Saturday morning and the light is warm
14.
There's that feeling again This sting in my chest I thought I'd outrun it But it's followed me west And my tossing and turning It wakes you I mutter… something Of rivers locked in crystal, of ghosts moving within us Of bloodlines and breakage, of bones dislocated Of hidden hills to climb under the surface Of the heart beneath the heart I know I'm half-telling I would have wanted you to know all the secrets But the lines in my face The remnants, the trace The tears in my eyes Don't they tell you Better than anything could? To an ever-shut womb To spring forever in bloom To an echoless room That's where i'm going On the blowing of the horn

about

I recorded this album myself in various makeshift home studios and was lucky to have Pascal Semerdjian (from Lebanese dream-pop band Postcards) contribute drums.

It picks up where "Dead Pets, Old Griefs" left off, digging deeper into memory and the past to excavate the memories and post-memories that lie buried in crypts. In early 2020, I was inspired and enlightened by Nicolas Abraham and Mária Török's notion of ghosts as trauma - the intergenerational transmission of the phantom. It led me down a rabbit hole and to a batch of new songs.

I hope they resonate with you.

Love,
Karl

"A beautiful and frequently head-spinning indie-folk-rock-noise record, encompassing everything from charming and straightforward pop rock to acoustic folk songs to fuzzy, layered psychedelia." - Rosy Overdrive
